PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Product Development Scientist is accountable to develop coated nonwoven products to enable rapid growth of the Nonwoven European business in the Construction market segment. Projects will be focused on developing products that create new value for customers through enhanced functionality or productivity, improve quality and consistency and optimize the total manufacturing cost. This job will span customer needs definition, solution development at the lab/pilot scale, and implementation of technical solutions in the manufacturing plant. The position is located at the Apeldoorn, Netherlands Science & Technology Facility.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Commitment to safety:
  • Build an annual performance objective for safety
  • Actively participate in team safety meetings, learning team events, and training
  • Demonstrate a daily commitment to the safety of the team by promoting safety awareness and achieving full compliance with all Owens Corning standards

  1. Product development:
  • Build a deep understanding of the coating formulation, product, and process technologies in our manufacturing plant in Bruggen, Germany.
  • Develop coating chemistry formulations and coated nonwoven products that are compatible with OC’s manufacturing processes and create new value for customers.
  • Partner with the Process Science and Testing Lab teams to develop & implement test methods and process/application mimics to enable faster development and quantify the value that new solutions create for our customers.
  • Partner with the Intellectual Property team to develop control points for new products in line with the technical strategy.
  • Manage all development projects using the Stage-Gate process for decision-making.
  • Leverage internal and external laboratory networks to accelerate development.
  • Connect globally with scientists across our Nonwoven Innovation centers (Chambery, France; Granville, OH, US; Gastonia, NC, US) to share knowledge and provide technical support.

  1. Technical Expertise:
  • Monitor technology in his/her area of expertise.

  • Thoroughly document work in technical reports.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Polymer Science/Engineering
  • 5-8 years of industry experience in rheology and coating formulation in an R&D environment
  • Ability to travel within the EU at 40%
  • Interest in working in both laboratory and plant environments
  • Fluent in German, and English

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Polymer Science/Engineering
  • 8+ years of industry experience in coatings, adhesives, sealants, additives, and elastomers in an R&D environment
  • Experience in the European construction materials industry
  • Fluent in Dutch in addition to German, and English

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Proficient in statistical analysis & comfortable in using software like Minitab or JMP
  • Six Sigma certification (green or black belt) is preferred.
  • Sound communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn across multiple technology domains.
  • Teamwork Oriented: self-starter who works with minimal supervision and balances multiple assignments; works effectively across technical, marketing, commercial, and manufacturing groups to ensure project success. 
  • Accountability: knows what needs to be done and gets it done. Willingly takes responsibility for project outcomes as a whole. Unafraid of owning the results, actions, and decisions of self or organization. Committed to following through to completion.
