The Category Lead, Americas Packaging is responsible for executing all aspects of packaging and direct materials strategies in the Americas including effective negotiations, cost reductions, material substitutions, risk mitigation and overall supplier management.  This role will also be accountable for strategy development in the Americas as determined by the Sourcing Leader, Global Packaging. 

This role is the primary connection point to both the supply chain purchasing leaders but also the plant leadership teams to drive effective collaboration of project implementation for supplier management, risk mitigation as well as value creation initiatives.

Performance for the role will be measured against specific sourcing metrics (inflation/deflation, value creation, working capital, et. al) and the effective regional development and execution of the strategy of multiple sub categories (Poly, Lumber, Pulp/Paper, Tape, Facings, et. al).

Trusted Business Partner

  • Category Lead, Americas Packaging drives customer value by executing regional strategy ensuring lowest total cost packaging/direct material solutions into each of our manufacturing facilities within the region. 
  • Effectively manages stakeholders across the region to implement strategy and build credibility around spend and productivity initiatives with a high focus on operations partnership.
  • Manages supply base, inflation and savings forecasts in a data driven manner accounting for potential short, medium and long-term risks
  • Partners with supply chain purchasing leaders, S&T, plant teams and other stakeholders to mitigate category & supplier risk as necessary.
  • Is regarded by the employees of Owens Corning as a role model for their growth, development and conduct.

Supplier Relationship Management

  • Ensure operations are consistent with the global supplier code of conduct and OC values.
  • Develop strong relationships with appropriate levels of key supplier base
  • Visit suppliers regularly to assess their capabilities and risk levels and develop action plans to address any major gaps
  • Drive appropriate level of supplier management (cost, quality and service) for supply base and make this a linchpin of continuous improvement for OC/supplier relationship and results
  • Develop deep understanding of key regional supplier industries through “outside in” perspective and regularly calibrate the contemporary state of this perspective
  • Benchmark our key regional suppliers regularly
  • Lead the negotiations and the codifying of key regional contracts where and when appropriate to support the overall strategy.
  • Execute supplier management for category in region, including:
    • Performance management platform (cost, quality and service)
    • Supplier recognition
    • A process for auditing performance

Strategic Sourcing Expertise

  • Category Knowledge: the Category Lead, Packaging Americas has overall responsibility to both lead the strategy development with regional insights and data as well to execute the strategies that are thoughtfully developed and analyzed with focused insight on the external market including;
    • Deep regional category knowledge including regional supply & demand trends
    • Supplier and category risks
    • Product specifications
    • Supplier performance management
    • Value creation and other relevant business factors
  • Other strategic sourcing expertise
    • Business and financial acumen to actively lead impactful discussions of alignment regarding inflation/deflation, value creation initatives and working capital improvement
    • Lead the RFx process and competitive bidding for the regional mineral category and along with good legal competence, develop and execute contracting tactics to support the overall strategy


  • Total Value Creation targets and monthly tracking across programs, business and segment built on negotiated cost reductions and material cost take out
  • Cash flow improvement targets driven by business need executed through payment terms extension and/or supply chain financing along with inventory reductions
  • Accurate inflation forecasting through the lens of an external market perspective and qualitative explanations for key assumptions
  • Sets HARD Annual Goals & Objectives with Sourcing Leader, Global Packaging



  • An undergraduate degree in business, finance, engineering or related field of study
  • Five plus years of global sourcing or relevant business or commercial experience (engineering/technical, operations, finance, general management)
  • Project management that drives impact, strong results and leads change
  • Demonstrated results


  • Packaging commercial and/or technical background
  • Experience at creating and implementing strategies within a corporate environment for supply chain or businesses.
  • Strong team player, with experience and strong results in team-based matrix organizations geographically and functionally.
  • Demonstrated track record of results, strong commercial orientation, with thorough understanding of financial statements, especially cash flow and cash generation, cost reduction, productivity, and working capital.
  • Managing external perspective relative to macro-economic trends
  • Application of data driven management through six sigma metrics, FMEA, SWOT, DMAIC
  • Planning complex projects across multiple internal functions
  • Demonstrated acumen on sourcing influence to financial metrics including; cash flow and EBIT
