PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Analytical Laboratory has an opening for a technician level analyst to work in the inorganic section of the group.  This position is in a corporate lab that services the technical needs of all of OC’s business units around the globe.  The position includes routine and non-routine sample preparation along with completing qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on a wide range of materials.  This will include the characterization of various raw materials used to make our products as well as the finished product itself.  The incumbent will be a key player in a team-focused environment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, SCOPE, and CONTRIBUTIONS

Sample preparation of inorganic materials for instrumental analysis (60%)

  • General sample preparations (Fusions, dilutions, titrations, weighing, etc.)
  • Working with acids, including hydrofluoric acid
  • Performing classical and wet chemical analyses
  • Following, developing, teaching and troubleshooting detailed methods and procedures; interpreting observations and results
  • Utilizing the LIMS to manage tasks for efficient operation of the lab

Quantitative analysis by instrumental methods, wet chemistry methods, and titrations (30%)

  • Utilizing software and instrumentation for the analyses of samples prepared (Fusion instruments, balances, TGA, etc.)
  • Sample preparation and quantitative analysis of raw materials and glasses
  • Taking responsibility for assigned tests including planning, testing, and delivering timely results
  • Providing quality repeatable and reproducible testing results without errors
  • Maintaining instruments and equipment; identifying and purchasing consumables
  • On-time testing and final reports
  • Proactive communication with team on timelines and results

Method development, validation, and establishment of instrumentation (10%)

  • Demonstrates expertise in at least one instrument or method
  • Utilize advanced instrumentation with data interpretation
  • Develop and validate methods as needed
  • Method development, maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs of equipment used
  • Generation of ideas for and leading continuous improvement of lab processes or methods

Participate in group safety functions (10%)

  • Continuous commitment and attention to safety in the laboratory working environment
  • Dedication to housekeeping and lab safety
  • Initiate and leads special safety projects within the lab
  • Leading and participation in monthly safety meetings and safety days; housekeeping audits
  • Authoring SOPs, JHAs, MOCs for new method development and implementation

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates or college degree in a science (Chemistry preferred)
  • 3+ years’ experience working in a chemical laboratory (Preferred instrumentation: Balances, Fusion equipment, Flame AA; ICP-OES; XRF)

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Diverse experience with analytical instrumentation
  • Safely working with hazardous chemicals
  • Attention to detail while performing repetitive work
  • Proficiency in MS Office and ability to quickly learn to navigate instrument specific software
  • Working with acids (experience with HF is preferred but not required)
  • Working knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) preferred but not required
