SUMMARY

The intent of this position is to have a fully trained individual that serves to assist shift leaders with routine production activities on a full-time basis.  This could include situations when shift leaders are attending meetings or training sessions, leading team projects or any other events when shift leaders need additional resources. 

The individual in this position would provide support by monitoring production activities; verifying team members are present on their assigned jobs and otherwise coordinating production tasks to ensure safe and stable production operations.  In addition, he/she would coach and develop team members and provide guidance as needed.  The relief leader will support supervisors with corrective actions or disciplinary actions related to employee performance or attendance; and timekeeping within Kronos.

Selection

The NLT will select based on competency via the LDP and other performance criteria.  Key criteria include attendance, demonstrated leadership ability, current job performance.  There may be an interview process for this position.  Seniority may be used as a tie breaker if candidates are even.  Candidates within the LDP will be given strong consideration.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Safety/Environmental/Housekeeping:

  1. Serves as a champion for plant safety, understanding of all safety procedures.
  2. Encourages use of Safety Observations submitted by team members with feedback to employees
  3. Ensures that 5S assignments are completed
  4. Monitors processes to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, taking corrective actions to ensure no non-compliance situations
  5. Be involved in the process of Incident Investigation

Leadership:

  1. Understands plant/shift goals and facilitates activities with team members toward goal accomplishment
  2. Communicates on operational issues with previous shift and oncoming shift
  3. Ensures team members are trained to handle all requirements of their job.
  4. Works out employee relief schedules
  5. Provides strong support to TPM
  6. Works with other employees in a fair and professional manner
  7. Serves as a role model for proper diversity and non-harassment practices
  8. Provides shift leaders with prompt, accurate information regarding personnel questions

Production

  1. Coordinates the activity of employees during all aspects of start-up, operation and shut-down.
  2. Monitors manufacturing process equipment and support equipment
  3. Adjusts and troubleshoots equipment and contacts Maintenance when required
  4. Maintains written reports and records as required
  5. Assists with training of employees
  6. Ensures proper recording of production, including second, hold material and reporting ST/DT
  7. Takes ownership of special process areas as assigned
  8. Completes Root Cause Analysis when required

Quality:

  1. Monitors process/product data to assure processes are run in control
  2. Ensures that team members are trained to recognize and react to off-quality product
  3. Ensures that mini-audits and other QC tests are performed
  4. Follows plant procedures for handling non-conforming product

Knowledge/Skills

  • Technical knowledge:
    • Possess at a basic knowledge of the entire manufacturing process and
    • Possess a detailed understanding of at least one part of the process and
    • Possess a basic understanding of all production jobs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

The employee should have the following:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Good Attendance
  • No disciplinary issues

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee should possess the ability to:

  • The ability to work varying shifts as required
  • Exposure to hot/cold temperatures on a regular basis
  • Exposure to continuous noise and able to wear hearing protection
  • Lifting, carrying/moving up to 50 pounds
  • Standing/sitting frequently
  • Bending occasionally
  • Walking frequently
