Senior Scientist, Foamular(R) Insulation

This position is key to enabling growth in our FOAMULAR® brand insulation business, requiring expertise in materials science (polymers and blowing agents) and mechanical equipment operation; the position advises and participates in the development and implementation of new foam formulations, materials substitution and process optimization to produce foam meeting federal and international environmental regulations and to reduce product production unit-costs. This job will enable OC to maintain business profitability, improve existing product quality and offer new product features leading to market share growth.

Span of Control:          Individual Contributor, with future leadership opportunities


Living Safely:

  • Participates in monthly safety meetings
  • Ensures rigorous compliance with safety procedures and OC corporate safety policies
  • Focuses on sustaining a safe work environment for self and coworkers
  • Translates work safety knowledge to personal/home life

Process Fundamentals (60%):

  • Explore and understand process modifications to improve product performance
  • Understand the chemistry and thermodynamics of new and/or enhanced products
  • Rapidly prototype and trial new concepts using the pilot-line
  • Plan and lead Plant trials of new process equipment
  • Participate in Product Development and Cost take-outs where process modifications are required

Project Leadership (20%)

  • Lead Process Development projects from concept to completion (Go/Kill)
  • Manage project information in VelOCity, our corporate stage-gate project management tool
  • Work with Plant/Business Leaders to build (or assist in building) the business case for R&D projects
  • Provide training and knowledge-transfer to Operations (manufacturing & engineering) before launch
  • Communicate effectively with people at all levels and positions in the organization

Protect OC Intellectual Property (20%)

  • File Invention Records on all innovations early in the innovation process
  • Build an IP strategy (FTP searches, filings and trade secrets) for own development programs
  • Write and file technical/memo reports within 1-month of project closure, writing at least 2 reports annually
  • Ensure communication with external (non-OC) contacts is protected by confidentiality agreements



  • MSc or PhD in Polymer Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or directly related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in process research and/or a product development environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and at least one statistics or modeling software
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% per month or more when project requires plant trials for scale-up


  • Exposure to an industrial operating environment
  • Demonstration of safe work practices & safe behaviors
  • Leadership of interdisciplinary teams to achieve a common business objective


  • Effective communicator – verbally and when documenting/presenting work
  • Ability in a second language (Spanish/French) is preferred, but not required
  • Ability to make a clear point succinctly
  • Willingness to stop a job/task without hesitation when safety concerns arise
  • High work-rate and energy level – conveys enthusiasm and positivity to team
  • Ability to manage projects to a committed timeline
